How to use · FAQ

What happens when the teams can’t be the same size?

Teams never differ by more than one person. If the names don’t divide evenly, the extra people go to the first teams, one each. 23 people in 4 teams makes 6 · 6 · 6 · 5.

With By max team size, the tool picks a number of teams so no team goes over that size. 23 people with up to 5 per team makes 5 teams (5 · 5 · 5 · 4 · 4). You see how many teams and how many people in each before you press the button.

Is it fair? Can the same teams come up again?

It shuffles all the names without bias using your browser’s crypto.getRandomValues (a Fisher–Yates shuffle), then deals them out to the teams in turn. The order you typed the names in doesn’t affect the result.

“Shuffle again” starts from scratch every time, so the same teams can come up again by chance — it doesn’t try to avoid the last result. It also doesn’t balance skill or gender, so swap people by hand if you need to.

Are the names saved?

No. Names are only used on this page — not sent to a server, not saved, not put in the link. They’re gone when you close the page. To keep the teams, press “Copy result” and paste them somewhere.
